Restored stone and timber courtyard of Shigar Fort heritage hotel

Seniors and comfort-focused travelers

Comfort & Luxury

The Karakoram, taken slowly and slept in beautifully

You don't have to rough it to experience the greatest mountains on earth. Gilgit-Baltistan hides two of Asia's most atmospheric heritage hotels — the 400-year-old Shigar Fort and the 19th-century Khaplu Palace, both restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and run by Serena. Sleeping in a raja's carved-timber chambers after a day among Karakoram peaks is an experience few destinations anywhere can match.

Comfort-first itineraries are built around short distances and long stays. Fly from Islamabad to Skardu — fifty minutes of Himalayan spectacle, often with Nanga Parbat filling the window — rather than enduring two days on the highway. Base three nights at Shigar, two at Khaplu, and let the valleys come to you: apricot orchards, ancient wooden mosques, and terrace dinners under some of the clearest night skies in Asia.

In Hunza, the luxury benchmark is a glass-fronted pod on the shore of Attabad Lake, where you wake to turquoise water without leaving your bed. Days are gentle by design — a slow morning at Baltit Fort, a flat stroll through Altit's royal garden, sunset by car at Eagle's Nest — with nothing steeper than a garden path unless you ask for it.

This style of travel suits seniors, honeymooners and anyone who measures a trip in moments rather than miles. Private vehicles, experienced drivers, handpicked rooms and flexible daily plans mean the itinerary bends around you — including rest days whenever the mountains and the apricot blossom deserve longer looks.

What this experience includes

Heritage nights at Shigar Fort and Khaplu Palace

Stay in award-winning Serena restorations — carved walnut pillars, stone courtyards and museum rooms — with modern bathrooms, fine dining and staff drawn from the surrounding villages.

Luxury lakeside pods at Attabad

Glass-fronted suites and upscale resorts line Attabad Lake's shore, pairing panoramic turquoise views with proper beds, heating and room service. A private boat cruise leaves from steps away.

The scenic Skardu flight

Swap a 14-hour road journey for a 50-minute flight from Islamabad that threads the great peaks — on clear days Nanga Parbat rises level with the cabin windows. We book flexible fares and hold road backups.

Short walks, big views

Gentle, mostly level strolls: the orchard lanes of Karimabad, Khaplu's old town and chaqchan mosque surroundings, and the shore path at Upper Kachura Lake. Each lasts under an hour with the car nearby.

Slow mornings and golden-hour drives

Itineraries skip pre-dawn starts in favour of leisurely breakfasts, then time the day's single drive for late-afternoon light — desert dunes near Skardu, or the Eagle's Nest terrace above Hunza at sunset.

Private dining and orchard picnics

Trout lunches by the Kachura lakes, apricot-blossom picnics in spring, and candle-lit fort dinners — meals are events in themselves, arranged privately for your party.

Comfort & Luxury — frequently asked questions

Are there luxury hotels in Hunza and Skardu?

Yes. Baltistan has the Serena-run Shigar Fort and Khaplu Palace heritage hotels, Skardu has full-service resorts, and Hunza offers boutique hotels plus glass-fronted luxury pods on Attabad Lake. Standards at the top end are genuinely high, though this is still a remote mountain region.

Is Gilgit-Baltistan suitable for older travelers?

Very much so, with the right itinerary. Key sights are reached by private vehicle plus short, flat walks; altitudes on a comfort route stay mostly below 3,000 m; and flights replace the longest drives. Tell us about mobility or health considerations and we pace the trip accordingly.

How reliable are flights to Skardu and Gilgit?

Flights operate daily in season but are weather-dependent, and cancellations happen. We build buffer days around flights and always hold a comfortable road alternative with an overnight stop, so a cancelled flight adjusts the trip rather than derailing it.

What is the best time of year for a comfort-focused tour?

April–May for apricot and cherry blossom, September–October for golden autumn light and stable weather — both shoulder seasons offer mild days, quieter hotels and the region's most photogenic conditions. High summer works too, with cooler temperatures than lowland Pakistan.
