No mountain range on earth concentrates as much vertical drama as the Karakoram, and Gilgit-Baltistan holds its finest trails. The crown is the K2 Concordia trek: 10–14 days up the Baltoro Glacier from Askole to the natural amphitheatre where K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums stand in a single panorama mountaineers call the throne room of the mountain gods. It is long and demanding, but entirely non-technical — a walker's route into the world's greatest mountain arena.

Not every great trek here needs two weeks. Rakaposhi Base Camp is an achievable 2–3 day round trip from Minapin in Nagar, ending at meadows beneath a wall of hanging ice. The Patundas plateau above Passu crosses the white ice of the Passu Glacier to a 4,100-metre viewpoint over both the Batura and Passu glaciers. And Nanga Parbat Base Camp, reached via Fairy Meadows, puts you under the Raikot face of the world's ninth-highest mountain in three to four days.

What separates a good Karakoram trek from a punishing one is preparation: sensible acclimatization days built into the schedule, licensed guides who read the weather and the glacier, and the Balti and Hunzai porters whose load-carrying and route knowledge make the Baltoro possible at all. Expeditions to restricted zones such as Concordia also require government permits and a licensed guide — paperwork your operator arranges months ahead.

For mountaineers, Baltistan is the staging ground for four of the world's fourteen 8,000-metre peaks, and Skardu's expedition culture runs deep: gear shops, agency offices and a long roll-call of legendary high-altitude porters. Whether your goal is a base camp or a summit, this is where the big mountains begin.
